Pizza pilgrimage in Naples: L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele
Neapolitans will rarely order anything other than a margherita or marinara pizza so there is no better place to try them than here.
The wood-fired oven occupies the centre of the restaurant, churning out pizzas at a breathless pace. You get the feeling you have under three minutes to sit, eat and pay but it is well worth the experience and works as a good simple lunch option.
As befits the birthplace of pizza, Naples is home to a number of famous pizzerias, among them the historic - and iconic - L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele, founded by Salvatore Condurro in 1870 and still run by the Condurro family. The choice is simple – pizza Marinara with tomato, oregano and garlic or pizza Margherita, with tomato, basil and garlic, the pizza reputedly created in honour of Queen Margherita of Savoy when she visited Naples in 1889.
